Las Vegas Sun is reporting that Harrah’s has backed out of its plans to build an arena on the land it owns on the Las Vegas Strip.   What better way to drive an additional 20,000 people through your casino then building a sports arena adjacent to all your properties?  I always thought this was a great move for Harrahs since they already had the land and a JV partner was willing to contribute the catpital

I have not found a reason why Harrahs has backed out, but if I had to venture a guess, it would be that massive amount of debt they are carrying on their balance sheet now from their recent LBO.  Throw in very weak economy and I could see why they might be a bit skittish.

Also, since this arena article mentions the goal of landing a professional hockey team for the arena developers, let me just say Vegas deserves a professional sports team.  And since we already know Vegas hates the NBA, hockey would be perfect.  The city would embrace a hockey team like no other expansion city has in the NHL. There was talk a few years ago of the Pittsburgh Penguins moving to Vegas but that never panned out.  Too bad, look what they’re missing…
